So D&D 5E is out…

My stream has come alive with un-boxings of the starter game, excited people, kids playing with new dicenand people talking about various parts of the new system.  But my stream has also come alive with negativity and vitriol as the Edition Wars begin to heat up again.  I am looking at the whole thing and wondering why it has to be this way.

I did some reasonable investigations into 5E through the play-tests and I actually thought it was a good looking system that was retro mixed with some new mechanic styles.  I even tried to run a game of it but could not find any takers at the time.  But you know what, that is OK.  I became a bit of a drama king about it on my Iron Tavern blog posts at the time but now I am just happy that the game gets to live on and people that like it get to play it.

Put on your flame retardant suit – The Edition Wars are here

I have openly stated that I will not be buying the system.  That is because while I found it interesting I did not feel it would engage me long term for the style of play that I like.  I have Pathfinder, 13th Age and hopefully the new edition of Earthdawn when it releases next month will keep me very happy.  That said, if you are interested in the new system, get out there and buy it.  Play it.  In fact, play the hell out of it!

Why all this negativity spews out about this stuff I will never know.  I just do not understand it.  I am not buying in to it because I took a look and I think it will play well but I prefer other systems.  My preference is my own point of view and may not be the same point of view as yourself.  That is a good thing.  In fact it is a brilliant thing.  As I tell all my students, wouldn’t it be a boring world if we all agreed on everything all the time.  Diversity offers opportunity so take some of those opportunities yourself and make your own mind up.

I just had to say it.  Sorry, but Edition Wars does no one any good and has no real value in the long run.  If we get multiple systems and they all do well and make people come to the hobby then awesome.  Hopefully some of those new hobbyists may become my readers one day and I will welcome them, regardless of their D&D focus.  Keep rolling!
